I have just posted my review of the Weihrauch HW 66 Production rifle in 22LR which was published last year in one of the SSAA magazines.
A nicely engineered piece of German gunsmithing it also proved accurate off the bench.

Hi Don,
a good hunting buddy of mine has the HW66 and i recall a deer hunting trip a few years ago when we sat on the edge of a good rabbit warren and the HW66 got into action. May i say i was impressed then and i did say if i ever replaced my current Marlin 925 it would be with a HW66.
I finally found one at a local dealer and examined it yesterday – in excellent nick and priced right- so all that i need to do now is paperwork and then wait the usual few weeks.
The rifle IMHO is far superior to many of the current rifles that now have pinned barrels – the HW66 is made properly!!
Cheers

Hi Con
The Germans know how to make excellent rifles. I am still hankering after a lovely little German single shot stalking rifle.
However, as much as I like my HW66 I am thinking about selling it.
I find that for bunny shooting and plinking I grab my Ruger Compact these days.
Off the bench the HW66 is more accurate, but that does not reflect in field situations where the superior balance, pointiness and fast handling of the Ruger are a pronounced advantage. I also like the ten shot rotary magazine.
Also, the synthetic stock and less polished metalwork mean the Ruger can take some knocks, whereas I need to be more careful with the HW66.
I always highly rate field handling and usability well above looks.
Plus, I try not to maintain more than one rifle in any particular calibre – one of ’em has to go!
cheers

Don,
I agree with your sentiments – the Ruger would be very handy with the rotary mag and synthetic stock.
Previous to the HW66 my 22 LR was a Marlin 925 which i had since new and served me well – i am in the process of boxing it up for sending to the new owner. I have shot many game with it but keeping two .22’s is one too many. But the HW66 should serve me well – just need to find an extra magazine!!
Cheers

Hi Con
I had a custom leather ammo pouch made, with a pocket for the spare 5 shot magazine.
If I cannot attached some photos here I will blog about it.
On a hectic plinking or bunny shooting session I like to have plenty of ammo ready to load and a spare mag.
cheers

Hi Guys- Does a 10 Shot Magazine Exist for the HW-66
Hi Peter
Unless something has changed – no.
I think their is an 8 round version.
Surprisingly, Weihrauch opted for an ugly extension of their otherwise slick 5 shot magazine in order to fit the 66.
cheers
